In learning about the events leading up to the tragic mass murder on Bourke St last week, the Andrews Government has announced a review and overhaul of the state’s bail system.
This does not go far enough because a complete overhaul of the entire judicial system is needed, Shooters Fishers and Farmers Member for the Northern Victoria Region Daniel Young said.
“When it comes to suspects with histories of repeated violent offending, we should not be taking a narrow focus and only consider the failings of the Victorian volunteer bail justice system,” Mr Young said.
“The background to the lead-up to this incident illustrates the wider problems in our judicial system: limited arrest powers, weak sentencing laws, lack of remand centres and a wholly inadequate bail system. Reforms in each of these areas is urgently needed to provide for the safety of innocent bystanders trying to go about their daily routine.”
