Proposed funding to investigate sporting opportunities at the Field & Game Australia Willowmavin Complex is a sound investment, according to Member for Northern Victoria Daniel Young.

In the 2017-18 State Budget, $1 million has been allocated to the Shooting Sports Facilities Program to improve the quality of shooting facilities and activities across Victoria. One of the projects earmarked is a study of the Willowmavin Complex, located just over an hour from the Melbourne CBD.

“This is a fantastic site, with plenty of potential to offer a range of sporting activities to attract tourism to the region, as well as accommodate the local population growth,” said Mr Young, a member of the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party.

Set amid scenic, undulating fields on the outskirts of Kilmore, part of the complex is currently home to the Kilmore Field & Game Branch to provide for clay target shooting opportunities and events. But it has always been envisioned the site could be utilised by a variety of sporting groups, Mr Young said.

The announcement to study the scope of sporting possibilities comes three years after the Victorian Government made a substantial contribution towards the purchase of the land and other upgrades to its facilities.

“Considering the Government’s commitment to help purchase the land, it is reasonable to expect continued investments in a project that would become a significant asset to the region,” Mr Young said. “This is an ideal opportunity for the Government to invest in a regional sporting complex that would enhance tourism in the district and meet the increasing demands of the region.”

“Interest in shooting sports has seen impressive gains over recent years, with more women and juniors getting involved. Whilst I support having a first-class shooting complex in Kilmore, the site also offers ample opportunity to establish alternative sporting interests. “
